Animation is a competitive field plagued with battling budgets and short deadlines. Throw in the complexity of most animation programs or worse, lose control with the limitations of some programs that try to simplify animation, and the frustration level and cost are amplified.

Reallusion’s iClone is a real-time animation environment that provides ease of use to new users while giving seasoned professionals the tools they need to deliver timely and quality results.

iClone stands out as being the most accessible and easy-to-learn 3D animation application — but that doesn’t mean it’s not professionally powerful. On the contrary, it’s filled with clever features that make complex animation hyper easy!

Also, iClone’s latest version has boosted the quality of its renders, including PBR materials, Image Based Lighting with HDR pictures, and Global Illumination, and because of this, it has motivated us to start creating models of vehicles for iClone, that not just look good, but that thanks to the improved render features, help people with their animations.

So I included features like emissive materials or parts that can be manipulated individually. Objects like the doors, the steering wheel, the gear level, and the pedals are all interactive sub-props that can be rotated or reached by the characters of a scene. Helping to create convincing driving animations.

In addition, the 4 Wheel structure provided by Reallusion’s Physics Toolbox, allows one to actually drive the vehicles over the iClone terrains while recording their motions in real-time. It facilitates the animation of the vehicles, as the spinning of the wheel are automatically synchronized with the motion of the car, depending on its speed, while it follows the slopes and irregularities of the terrain.

This is an overview tutorial of the pipeline I followed to create these models and how they can be easily animated in iClone.

Damien Valentine (DarthAngelus)

I started making videos since 2002. It was around the time that independent filmmakers were realising that the internet was a good way to share their stories.

Over the years, I’ve seen some excellent films and wanted to try it for myself. Unfortunately, I didn’t know anyone who was willing to be in front of a camera, nor did I actually have a camera. So I turned to animation and I was able to enlist online friends who lived too far away to do anything live action but who were interested in voice acting. I also helped run the Machinima Expo for 8 years.

“…a tour de force that is unmatched in the industry.

Jeff Jasper – http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2483892/

“iClone 7 represents a huge leap in features that take iClone to a whole new level for professional production workflows. Studios have long dreamed of an animation platform with integrated performance capture, procedural animation and pipeline scripting in a package that also delivers stunning visual quality in real-time. Add in flexible integration with 3rd party software and game engines and you have a tour de force that is unmatched the in industry. Delivering on features like real-time GI with reflections, full PBR workflow and viewport rendering, HBAO+ and Shadow Mattes all bring the level of realism to the render to unprecedented levels. “The Pro Facial Animation system is a huge win for me as a Faceware user. It is by far the best integration of Faceware I have seen in any package. Combined with the new face keying you have a powerful combination to deliver truly professional results.  The Morph system is incredible and really frees the artist to do some truly impressive animation that was just not possible before.  Camera workflow and python scripting now mean iClone can seat nicely into existing studio pipelines easily.  Last but not least, curves. The curve editor means the artist now has the choice for real-time, procedural, or true hand key frames animation or combos of all three with absolutely no limitations.” – Jeff Jasper
